In March 2023, during the celebration of the first game of the World Baseball Classic between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, President Luis Abinader revealed to Diario Libre that a public-private partnership project was in the works to build a new Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium on the same site as the old one in Ensanche La Fe, which was inaugurated in 1956.
A year later, the project seems to be taking off, according to statements made by the president of the Leones del Escogido, businessman José Miguel Bonetti Du-Breil.
Although he rules out anything happening before the May elections “so as not to generate unnecessary noise”, the project, according to Bonetti Du-Breil, is on Abinader’s desk for endorsement.
It is a massive development plan, not only for the construction of a new sports building, which would be built parallel to the existing stadium, and which would allow winter ball to be played without trauma in the three years that the construction is projected to last.
